Since its inception in 2004, students in GMI have traveled extensively to an array of countries and regions with diverse and pressing health concerns. From the villages of Guatemala to the jungles of Papua New Guinea, these students have gained a wealth of knowledge about the state of international health care. With their experiences and the guidance of our learned faculty advisors, GMI has forged its mission to maximize its impact on the global community.
By conducting needs-assessment surveys and analyzing the findings, the members of GMI were able to trace a common thread among the issues facing nearly all the regions they visited. They concluded that the indigenous populations could reap the most benefit not from advanced medical technologies, but from the basic medical supplies that could be used to treat the most common, and generally preventable, illnesses. These populations simply lacked the supplies and therapies to treat these illnesses.
Thus, the students of GMI partnered with established oranizations such as MedWish International and Refuge International to work towards alleviating this staggering global health inequity. Since partnering with MedWish International, GMI has helped send hundreds of tons recycled medical supplies to clinics and hospitals worldwide. With Refuge International, GMI has sent dozens of students volunteers to several countires to help build and stock clinics and improve existing facilities. At its founding location at Case Western Reserve University, GMI has raised thousands of dollars and devoted countless hours of volunteer service towards raising awareness about health issues and towards furthering its mission: moving students FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION.
